One last look at 2024 as we step into the new year. I'm excited for all the music that is to come in 2025. Whether new bands are debuting with fresh material or long-time bands continue in the Christian rock or metal scene, I hope there is plenty of both and some in between. We may see more music from bands like Nine Lashes or the anticipated rock return of Kutless. Additionally, we might get more from Demon Hunter beyond those standalone singles. But with this recap, I want to bring to light the rest of 2024's and some new 2025 music. Enjoy.
Impending Doom - "Christ Is King"
What better way to start the new year than with a declaration of faith with death metal? Hardcore band Impending Doom will release a new EP in February, and to promote it, they have released two tracks; my favorite is "Christ Is King!" Although it's a short song, it's invigorating and worth listening to. "As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil x2. My simple prayer is that when I die, hell rejoices. I’m out of the fight cause in this war, I will know Christ is King. Christ is King! Christ is King!"
No Treaty - Sound The Trumpet
The debut release from the metalcore band No Treaty, Sound The Trumpet, was released late last year. Dropped in November, Sound The Trumpet quickly eclipsed so many other releases from 2024. This band is unique. Their sound is gripping, and their songwriting is mature and biblical. If they can continue riding their momentum, especially with a couple of viral social media clips, they could become a staple in Christian metal in the next few years.
Slechtvalk - At Death's Gate
Who here knows who Shamgar is? No, not Sammy Hagar. That's the lead vocalist and founder of the legendary Dutch, Christian, black metal band Slechtvalk (peregrine falcon). It's been a quiet eight years since their last release, At Death's Gate, but they have triumphantly returned with an excellent record that was well worth the wait. I missed it last Halloween, but it's constantly in rotation now. 2024 had a ton of great Christian black (or unblack) metal, but this is easily one of the best.
