In “Whisper and the Wind,” Bodie sings about walking through all kinds of challenges in life: indecision and loss of vision, feeling burdened and exhausted, and more. And at every turn, he reminds himself and us, as we listen to this song, that God was everything he needed in every one of those moments and will continue to be–even when he might not feel it.
It’s a subtle reference to the story in 1 Kings 19 when the prophet Elijah was discouraged and in hiding because people wanted to kill him for faithfully proclaiming the Lord as the true and living God and not the idols people were worshipping. In this moment of discouragement, God met with Elijah in a personal way on the mountain where he was hiding. The Bible says there was a mighty windstorm, an earthquake, and a fire that all passed by Elijah, but God was not in any of those things. Then, God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper and encouraged him not to give up. It reminds me of Psalm 139:7-12 where King David writes about how he can go nowhere to escape God’s presence and that God strengthens and supports us even in our darkest moments.
The point? Whatever you’re going through today or whatever you might go through in the future, know that God is present with you in that situation, and He can help with that situation. Sometimes, God at work in your life will feel visible, powerful, and noticeable. Sometimes, it will be subtle and simple, like the whisper Elijah heard. But have no doubt God is with you, and He is working. Ask Him to help you believe that and open your eyes to see it.
Psalm 46:1 (NLT): God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
Lyrics
When I'm feeling my feet are tired From running so hard for miles You are the air I really need When life is a rollercoaster And I start to lose composure You're in the drops, and in between
And every time I'm stuck in indecision Losing my vision You close the distance
And I don't need to see it to believe it For my whole life, You've been that all I've needed And I, I've felt You in the fire and the rain So help me learn to listen when You're speaking 'Cause love is not a secret that You're keeping And I, I've felt You when walls are caving in Yeah, You're with me in the whisper and the wind
So many nights I stayed in Trying to bear the weight when All that I want is already done You bridge the space I'm feeling When all I can see is ceiling Every time that I look up
And every time I'm stuck in indecision Losing my vision You close the distance
No, I don't need to see it to believe it For my whole life, You've been that all I've needed And I, I've felt You in the fire and the rain So, help me learn to listen when You're speaking 'Cause love is not a secret that You're keeping And I, I've felt You when walls are caving in Yeah, You're with me in the whisper and the-
I don't wanna waste any time, just looking for You in the Sky when You're so close, I can feel it's Your breath that I'm breathing
Now, I don't need to see it to believe it But my whole life, You've been that all I've needed And I, I've felt You in the fire and the rain (yeah) So, help me learn to listen when You're speaking 'Cause love is not a secret that You're keeping And I, I've felt You when walls are caving in Yeah, You're with me in the whisper and the wind
