Coko Clemons has been best known as the lead singer of the 90’s R&B group, SWV (Sisters With Voices). However, with the impending release of her sophomore album THE WINNER IN ME, Clemons will be seen as much more than a R&B singer who has “crossed over” to sing Gospel. Coko has proven that she is committed to spreading the message of joy and hope.
With impeccable vocal range, the songbird mixes her powerful voice with an extraordinary talent of producers to create a highly anticipated gospel album. The project brings together a strong production team including Jazz Nixon (Kelly Price, Karen Clark Sheard, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Heather Headley, Marvin Winans, Mary Mary, Kierra "Kiki" Sheard), Keith Crouch (Brandy, Lalah Hathaway, El DeBarge, Toni Braxton, Chaka Khan, CeCe Winans, The Winans, Andrae Crouch, Mary J. Blige), Tony Homer (Zie’l), Gerald Haddon (Bishop Noel Jones, Deitrick Haddon, Men of Standard), her husband and drummer for Israel Houghton, Mike Clemons, and others.
Her first single, “Wait”, shares how we must “learn that God knows what’s best” and to patiently wait to hear from Him. Produced by David Caton (Youthful Praise, Rev. Timothy Wright, New York State Mass Choir), Clemons goes straight to “church” as she belts out atop majestic strings.
The rock and Caribbean influenced, “Make A Way”, highlights that God always makes a way. Canton Jones joins Coko on the track to reiterate the strong message. “Rescue Me” is a smooth groove where Coko ministers a message from God for those that need to be rescued. Israel Hougton unites with Coko on “Joy of the Lord”, the upbeat dance tune that simply says “the joy of the Lord is my strength” drawing inspiration from Nehemiah 8:10. The title track speaks to issues such as self-esteem and reassurance. Coko uses her voice to share her testimony and is certain to help others realize the winner in themselves.
With THE WINNER IN ME, Coko delivers and gives an intimate portrayal of her journey. Embodied with rich upbeat urban tracks, spirited contemporary tunes and engaging melodies, THE WINNER IN ME is her proclamation that she is indeed a ‘winner’ and you are too. It is a must have for your gospel collection.
