As a singer, songwriter, and publisher, Ted Winn has carved out a unique niche in the world of gospel music, coming on to the scene as one-half of the Stellar Award-winning/Dove award-winning duo Ted and Shari, then enjoying a successful solo career since 2009.
Born in Memphis, TN, he and his sister were raised by their mother. He grew up with the support of generations of aunts, cousins, grandparents, and a great-grandmother. Keeping him in church and focused on music kept Ted out of trouble. He was good enough to graduate from the prestigious Watkins Overton Creative & Performing Arts High School where he was also very active in the choirs.
After leaving Memphis for a short stint, Ted returned and joined Kevin Davidson & The Voices of Binghampton. It was during that time that he met Sheri Jones-Moffett, who also sang in that choir.
While matriculating at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ted & Sheri officially launched themselves as a duo. Their resulting album, The Healing Starts Here, released in 2001. Ted & Sheri garnered numerous awards for this project, including two Stellar Awards. All of that buzz led to the 2004 Word Records album, Celebration. The rousing title song, written by Donald Lawrence, shot to the Top 5 on Billboard’s gospel singles chart and won the group additional Dove and Stellar award nominations.
Eventually, the duo parted ways in order for both to pursue solo careers. Ted signed with Shanachie Entertainment and scored hits with "The Lifter" and "God Believes In You" off his 2009 debut album, Balance. The album included songs written by Israel Houghton, Jonathan Nelson, PJ Morton, and Ted himself.
Ted continued to build his reputation as a songwriter, contributing to records by artists such as T.D. Jakes, Tamala Mann, and Youthful Praise. His songs were later performed by the likes of Marvin Sapp, Tonya Baker, and Bishop Paul S. Morton. He eventually returned with recordings of his own in 2015, releasing the single "More" on his own Teddys Jamz label. Back on Shanachie, Stand In Awe, Ted's sophomore solo ablum, arrived in 2017 and included the aforementioned "More" along with the singles "Grateful" and the title song.
