2012-14: Formation, Red Bull Records and Sick
Caleb Shomo began writing Beartooth songs while he was still in Attack Attack! as "a different musical outlet". Shomo has said the band originally "started as a joke band" with members of My TIckey Home, as a way to make fun, punk-rock, hardcore, wild music, play crazy shows and have a good time without pressure from anything. The band was originally called Noise, but was switched to Beartooth upon realization the name was already taken.
Beartooth's first songs “I Have a Problem”, "Set Me On Fire", and "Pick Your Poison" were first released online in January 2013. After releasing a live music video for “I Have a Problem,” Beartooth announced a string of one-off dates that brought them right into fans living rooms, mostly in the Midwest, following the buzz surrounding the band's live performance in the "I Have a Problem" live video. Beartooth played a date of the 2013 Van's Warped Tour, and are scheduled to play the entirety of the 2014 tour.
On June 7, 2013, Caleb Shomo announced that Beartooth was now signed to Red Bull Records. Beartooth released their debut EP Sick for free on their website on July 26, 2013. The EP featureds the songs "I Have a Problem", "Go Be the Voice", "Pick Your Poison", and "Set Me On Fire". On August 17, 2013, Beartooth released the official video for "I Have a Problem", not to be confused with the earlier live version. On December 18, 2013 the band were announced to play the entire Warped Tour 2014 along with The Ghost Inside, Saves the Day, A Skylit Drive and the Mighty. On November 14, the band released a music video for the song "Go Be The Voice".
2014-present: Disgusting
On January 6, 2014, Beartooth welcomed Kamron Bradbury of City LIghts as an official new member of the band.[11] In early 2014, Nick Reed stopped touring with Beartooth and Oshie Bichar formerly of City LIghts started touring with Beartooth as their new bassist.
On April 29, 2014 the band released a live music video for their new song, "Dead" set to appear on their forthcoming album, Disgusting. On May 13, 2014 the band's Facebook page announced the release date for their debut album, Disgusting, as June 10, 2014, along with its track listing. The band released their first single of the album the same day, titled 'Beaten In Lips', along with its music video. The album was available to stream online a day before its release.
Musical style
The band have been labeled as a modern hardcore punk band across both their albums (Sick EP & Disgusting) but have also been said to carry influences of nu metal and also metalcore, possibly derived from Shomo's previous band Attack Attack!, renown for their metalcore theme although Shomo decided to abandon the electronic elements. The band is also renown for their use of highly catchy chorus' and melodic verses, giving them high ratings to their music by critics. Caleb Shomo himself was named one of Altpress magazine's 15 best screamers in metalcore as of February 2014, of which he stated that the band's motive was "...to make fun, punk-rock, hardcore, wild music, play crazy shows and have a good time without any pressure from anything."
