The Awful Truth were a progressive metal band from the late 1980s based in Houston, Texas. They were a three piece consisting of bassist Monty Colvin, drummer Alan Doss and guitarist David Von Ohlerking. Not to be confused with other bands of the same name, they only released one album, the eponymously titled The Awful Truth. After the band split, Colvin and Doss formed the Galactic Cowboys. According to producer/manager Sam Taylor, Ohlerking named the band after the old 1937 movie of the same name. According to Colvin, Metal Blade Records signed the band after they had broken up. Metal Blade Records actually took the band's demos, mastered them and released them as The Awful Truth's debut album.
While not technically a Christian rock/metal band, the lyrics on their only release would be comparable to many (lesser known) Christian rock bands of today, and most fans of Christian rock would find the lyrics of this album generally unoffensive except, maybe, the last track which Roman Catholics and other similar minded "Mariologists" wouldn't care for. Most fans of the band Galactic Cowboys would probably also enjoy this album.
David Von Ohlerking has been making some new music recently under the moniker Awful Truth II, but it does not appear to be comparable to his earlier work lyrically, and is not recommended (by this author) for Christians who don't care for profanity in their music.
