Begun in the summer of 2017, The Solo Project by Colton Reed, Buried Above is a Christian rock band, based in Gray's Harbor WA.
If you think that being Buried Above sounds like a miraculous concept, you’d be right. The name of this Washington-based band refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ that we’re invited to share: "having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead" (Colossians 2:12). Colton Reed, the mastermind behind the band, is hoping that his songs share a piece of that miracle with his listeners.
Buried Above’s debut track “Blood” saw that message resonating with audiences as it debuted on The Christian Music Showcase and quickly climbed the rankings on Rock Rage Radio, The Dustin Tatro Show, Dead To Self Radio, ChristianRock.net, TheBlast.fm, and CMW’s Top 100 Christian Rock Songs of the Year. Follow-up single “The Front Lines” has also seen significant momentum on ChristianRock.net and TheBlast.fm.
Colton Reed honed his skills with guitar riffs and lyric crafting through working closely with Josiah Prince and Andrew Stanton of Disciple, who were first his guitar and songwriting teachers, and later his songwriting and studio collaborators. It’s a partnership that feels divinely orchestrated for Colton, who has long been inspired and encouraged by Disciple’s music. “I'm still trying to figure out how all of it happened,” he admits, “but I'm loving every second of it!”
Buried Above is the culmination of three years Colton has spent developing his skills and writing songs, in addition to many years beforehand being personally impacted by Christian rock. You can hear the influence of bands like Disciple, RED, and Skillet through songs that feature towering riffs and strong melodies, accented by gritty screams.
Although the sound Buried Above has developed is confident and strong with a maturity rare for a freshman band, for Colton, the message carries even more personal weight. “My message behind my music is very much a message to myself as well,” the singer admits. “The world is a very dark and gloomy place, more so now, I think, than it has been before. But the hope of Jesus is still as prominent now as it has been since the time of Paul. This generation is desperately in need of a reminder of that hope, a reminder that there is a better way to live our lives.”
In the end, every song Buried Above releases is rooted in that truth: “What we continuously forget is that the only war that really mattered has already been won. I want my listeners to know that there is hope in these situations, and that hope is found in a daily relationship with Christ. I found that out for myself 7 years ago, and I'm not going back.”
