The Door Within
by Adriana Lima | Genre: Fiction
Release Date: August 2005

The first in a projected trilogy begins in Aidan Thomas' new home; his family has moved to help his ailing grandfather. Aidan is unhappy about almost everything, but life really turns upside down when he discovers several ancient scrolls in his grandfather's basement. In short order, he finds himself opening "the door within"; on the opposite side is a world of noble kings and treacherous knights, and the inevitable struggle between good and evil. In the frame story about sacrifice and redemption, Batson has borrowed from C. S. Lewis, but the book's Christian overtones are not nearly as well woven as those in Lewis' work. There's plenty of fantastical adventure tethered to right and wrong here, and Aidan is a likable enough hero, though he seems more like a boy of 11 or 12 than the high-school kid he is.

A Great Read For PreTeens | Posted January 19, 2010
The Door Within by Wayne Thomas Batson is the exciting beginning of a fantasy-filled trilogy. Mystery, intrigue, and adventure fill the pages of this very good book. Meet Aidan Thomas, your regular teen guy. Not too popular, and if he ever was it was due to the fact that he was best friends with one of the coolest guys on the block, Robby. However, Aidan and his family must move from everything Aidan knows to care for Aidan's ill grandfather. There, Aidan discovers mysterious scrolls and a door to another world.
Some scenes seemed a little awkward, which is understandable since this series was written before Isle of Fire and Isle of Swords. Also, the whole idea of the story seemed very familiar. The idea of twins in another realm reminded me a little bit of the Circle series by Ted Dekker and it really reminded me of the Wormling series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry.
I would recommend this book to readers ages ten and up.

A Witty Book, Indeed | Posted August 13, 2008
Wayne Displays is ingenuity and wit in this tale of a outcast who finds out a great secret. One can tell that the author was looking ahead towards the end of the book through the various clues and descriptions. A must read fopr any Lord of the Rings fan.
