In addition to a host of social media posts from a wide range of artists this week, CCM singer/songwriter and former Sanctus Real frontman Matt Hammitt took to Facebook recently to share his thoughts regarding New York's new law, extending legalities for abortions through the entirety of the pregnancy. Hammitt shared about his son Bowen, and how doctors had advised him and his wife to terminate the pregnancy to avoid dealing with what would be a challenging medical road for the child. The post details how Hammitt and his wife chose life, and the blessings Bowen has brought into their life. Hammitt then lamented how this new law will rob other children of their chances to dance, laugh and sing, like Bowen has been blessed to be able to do.
Fans of Sanctus Real may remember being asked to pray for Bowen even before he was born. He has had several surgeries over the past 8 1/2 years to correct congenital heart ailments. Matt wrote several songs about this experience and even did some rounds on mainstream news outlets back when Bowen was born. (You can check out an old ABC News video clip here.) The Hammitts started bowensheart.com to chronicle their experience. While Bowen still deals with effects of his condition, anyone who follows Matt on social media can see that he is otherwise a happy and normal eight year old boy.
"It's a worn out narrative that abortion is simply a health issue. It's also a convenience issue. History repeats itself. Because of what happened in New York State this week, millions of feet that would otherwise dance, bellies that would laugh and voices that would sing will be violently silenced. When history writes abortion for what it really is, never let it be said of me that I was silent," Matt wrote. You can read the entirety of Hammitt's statement on
his Facebook page.
Additionally, the former Sanctus Real singer dropped a new project today. The
Living Room Sessions features acoustic recordings and videos for "Could've Been" and "He Always Wins," tracks from Hammitt's 2018 solo debut album, alongside the title track of the feature film "Like Arrows." Click
