The 53rd GMA Dove Awards took place last week and the recorded telecast aired on TBN on October 22, 2022. The evening was hosted by Gospel artist Erica Campbell (from the duo Mary Mary), and worship leader Chris Tomlin, and featured incredible performances from many of the most beloved Christian artists.
Awards were given in 36 categories over the course of the entire evening, a few of which were featured during the main ceremony. CeCe Winans for Artist of the Year, Anne Wilson for New Artist of the Year, CeCe Winans' "Believe For It" for Song of the Year, Phil Wickham's "Hymn Of Heaven" for Worship Album of the Year, for KING & COUNTRY's What Are We Waiting For? for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, NEEDTOBREATHE'S Into The Mystery for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year, and Maverick City Music's Tribl Nights Atlanta for Gospel Worship Album of the Year.
In addition to the big wins of the night and heartfelt acceptance speeches, there were several can't-miss performances. Steven Curtis Chapman performed a medley of songs from his 35-year career in music, including classics "The Great Adventure" and "Dive" and ending with a new song, "Don't Lose Heart," from his recently released album, Still. TobyMac opened his performance of his radio hit "The Goodness" with Blessing Offor by thanking the Christian music community for their support during the loss of his oldest son, Truett, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 21.
Gospel artist, Jekalyn Carr, gave a stirring performance of her song, "Your Portion," hip-hop artist Steven Malcolm gave a high-energy performance of his song "Aint Playin" with Social Club Misfits, and Gateway Worship Espanol brought Latin Gospel to the Dove Awards stage with "Danzando."
After New Artist of the Year winner, Anne Wilson, performed her hit song "My Jesus," she shared a bit of her testimony and how singing Hillsong Worship's "What A Beautiful Name" at her brother's funeral helped lead her into music ministry and bring comfort to her family during a time of loss. Brooke Ligertwood--who is a writer and lead vocalist on the song--then joined Anne on stage to end the performance by singing a chorus together. Maverick City Music closed the night with "Fear Is Not My Future," led by Naomi Raine.
The Dove Awards ceremony was a beautiful celebration of all the diverse genres of Christian music, the power it has to help people connect with God, and the artists whose gifts make it happen.
