Can't Count Him Out | Posted August-10-2009
In a world of autotune and over-produced tracks, The Tonic keeps it real. He puts enough beats and melody to get you to listen, but his lyrical and theological maturity keeps you listening. His latest CD, "The Dash" is a great example of how keeping things simple can make music great. For example, on "Can't Count Me Out", a background vocal chant is used to make the melody, then Tonic raps over the melody. No fancy techniques, just some beats and vocals.
I enjoyed this CD because it is an escape from today's music where lyrics are drowned out by over-produced tracks. Listeners will enjoy Tonic's great flow and clear message: "the dash"- our life here on Earth-is just as important as birth and death...so don't waste this short span of time!
Highlights:
-Can't Count Me Out
-Sin Universal
-Really Know Me
-No Time
-Deliver Us
-Bonus Track: I Am...Still!
Ready to Rebel | Posted August-05-2009
The "Rebel" CD showcased Lecrae's lyrical depth and amazing flow and attention to detail. This CD was on repeat for a couple of months. It was just that good.
It opens with the powerful Rebel Intro- reminding us that rebellion is a good thing because Christ was a rebel. "Jesus was a rebel, renegade, outlaw, sanctified trouble maker, but he never sinned naw..."
Highlights:
-Don't Waste Your Life (Dwayne Tryumf is amazing. I love the way he referenced Lecrae's verse from Jesus Musik.)
-Go Hard (Tedashii ended the song with a powerful flow. Nice touch.)
-Indwelling Sin (this battle of words with the devil was enlightening)
-Got Paper (This flow brings it all in perspective: "2nd Corinthians chapter 8 and verse 2, read that and please believe that, forget a c-note man they pockets was e-flat. They still had joy!")
-The Bride (Explains why the church will "never be replaced with a one-man band, or a small taliban with nobody in command, yeah!")
-Beautiful Feet (nice take on Isaiah 52:7-loved it!)
Overall, this CD is Lecrae at his finest. Yet I love how he stays humble and gives all glory to Christ in every song.
I see the Big Picture! | Posted August-05-2009
"The Pig Picture" is the latest from the livest MC in the biz. The CD walks listeners through the journey from The Fall of Man to the anticipated Return of Christ. The "U Ready?" explains the purpose he and other gospel rap artists do what they do: "That's why I sing and rap, wanna get these teens back, and save them from the smoke, like a nicotine patch!"
There are A LOT of highlights on this CD:
-U Ready? (because of the above quote)
-Legend (lets people dwell on the majesty of God)
-Trumpet Blow (Trip Lee was a nice touch, but the last lines were what did it for me: "Dear Lord, I don't know when imma see you, but I can't wait and I pray that it'll be soon!")
-You Made (I liked the flow of the chorus)
-Fantasy (J.R. made it flow nice)
-How Long (Beautiful flow. LOVE this song!)
-Suitcase (EXCELLENT CONCLUSION! I'm packed and ready to go. Stephen The Levite's verse did it for me. I love how he referenced T.R.U.T.H.'s spoken word from his first CD.)
Overall, this CD is a must have. It reminds you of the beauty of God's grand design and will have you longing to see him face-to-face!
