Bilbo's Tale

By BlackLeopard,
I adore this book by J.R.R. Tolkien and it's one of the few books that I've read twice! When I was younger, I read this book and I found it hard to understand...I didn't enjoy it as much. I just finished reading it again and I enjoyed it much better the second time. There is so much detail in The Hobbit and I love it.
The story starts out like this - Bilbo is content in the shire living in his hobbit-hole...that is until Gandalf comes for a visit! Gandalf tells Bilbo that he's going to send him on an adventure and that's how it all starts ;) Gandalf leaves but not without putting a mark on the hobbit's door. The next day, someone knocks on the door and Bilbo thinks it's Gandalf but is surprised to find a dwarf. Soon after meeting the first dwarf, twelve more have come to Bilbo's home to set off on an adventure. The dwarves' goal is to take gold that once belonged to their ancestors but there's a problem ~ Smaug the mighty dragon is guarding it.....
The chapters are long in this book - the first chapter is twenty-seven pages long!!! What I find cool about this book is that Tolkien wrote songs and riddles, which is really interesting to read. I have to add something here about the songs ~ Some of the songs that are sung by elves are extremely silly. I had a hard time imagining elves singing songs like that! Anyways, it's a great book and I can't wait to read other books by Tolkien.
