Undone by God

From the beginning, Bethel Music’s Steffany Gretzinger has had a desire to make music that matters, that stretches beyond entertainment and also stretches the parameters of popular worship music. She strives to be a listener first, and then to create music that reflects the Gospel and communicates honest experiences in a fresh and artful way.
The Undoing has eleven original worship songs, all beautifully produced in a stripped down piano/guitar style. These songs were written from a place of worship reflecting on what it means to be undone by God and are intended to lead listeners to that place.
I first heard Steffany sing on Bethel Music’s Be Lifted High and then was captivated by her song “You Know Me” on Bethel Music’s Loft Sessions. She slays me with her confessional and prayerful vocal style.
Opening track “Morning Song” is an unashamed declaration of faith about “waking up” to God’s mercies that are new every morning. Steffany tenderly sings “You’re the One that my heart is beating for” about her source of hope, Jesus. Each song is a worshipful response to her Savior reflecting the blessed hope of someone who understands the Good News of grace.
Her next song “Constant One” is a great reminder of God’s Sovereignty. This worship anthem is just the type of infusion that the church needs with its honesty and bold lyrics. The song has quickly become a prayerful anthem in my daily devotional time.
Steffany begins the song “Out of Hiding (The Father’s Song)” with these prayerful words sung from the perspective of our Father God singing over us, “Come out of Hiding, you’re safe here with Me, there’s no need to cover what I already see.” Right from the opening notes you’ll be captivated by the melody and message of this amazing song. The song celebrates one of the truths we can cling to as believers. In our fallen and sinful tendencies, God still thinks of us as His children. Once you’ve accepted Jesus as our substitute and Savior, God views us white as snow through the blood of His son instead of in our dirty states. That alone is cause for celebration.
“Cecie’s Lullaby” is a standout song written over Steffany’s friend. Her tender, emotive and powerful vocals take listeners on an emotional journey that gives me goose bumps every time I hear this song. Whatever struggle or depression you are facing you can know that God is with you.
“Letting Go” is a gorgeous offering to Jesus, proclaiming, "You've brought me to the end of myself / just when my hallelujah was tired, You gave me a new song / I'm letting go…falling into You." Like her great songs "You Know Me" and "Closer," you'll be worshipping our King Jesus right along with Steffany. This vulnerable expression also appears on Bethel Music’s Tides.
“Promise I Always Will” is a gorgeous faith statement. The song compels me to worship Jesus and profess my own appreciation for the pure love of Jesus. The song is a gorgeous profession of Steffany’s sincere desire to serve Jesus. I get completely overwhelmed in the emotion of this song.
“Steady Heart” is a hook-filled and ambient indie-pop vibe prayer song that proclaims “I can’t see what’s in front of me, still I will trust You.” I could hear the song being played in coffee shops alongside artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles. It is truly one of my favorite tracks on this flawless album.
Don’t miss the gorgeous and moving 1st John 4:8 inspired song, “No Fear in Love.” The song expresses the biblical theme that “there is no fear in love, but perfect Love casts out fear” running through this album and Bethel Music’s You Make Me Brave.
“Open Up Let the Light In” and “Getting There” are encouraging anthems of hope and healing that listeners can cling to in their own trying times. I know that many of us struggle with the idea that our past and present mistakes are unforgivable, yet the Bible tells us that isn't true.
Closing Thoughts:
This is an excellent set of songs that focus on the central themes of asking God to inhabit our inner being and truly allow the power of the Holy Spirit to sanctify us along with relying solely on the love of Jesus to truly mold our hearts and make us more like Him. I really love how expressive these songs are. Steffany loves a lot, and that is evident throughout this stellar “gourmet” offering. These are all stand-out tracks filled with overwhelming biblical truth and are companions in my personal prayer and worship time. Steffany sings songs with an amazing passion and with unashamed praise and gratitude to our Savior that is very inspiring and emotionally moving. All of these songs are poignant and powerful with earnest worshipful lyrics. The Undoing is one of the top worship albums of the year. This is truly a great album and a moving and prayerful worship experience.
