I gave my life to see this through
Laid new ground before you
One more second to redeem myself
One more second, let the tension swell for me
There is no telling after this
Just how far the fall is
One more second 'fore the cord is cut
One more second to be dead enough for you
Run to the mercy inside
Oh, sacred hands
There in the place where I died
And you began
I need your affirmation
I lay my head, but I can't sleep
You are the end for me
I found my consolation
I made my peace, but I can't leave
You are the end for me
I feel my time begin to wane
No more try in vain now
One more second for a peace of mind
One more second til the end of time for you
Run to the mercy inside
Oh, sacred hands
There in the place where I died
And you began
I need your affirmation
I lay my head, but I can't sleep
You are the end for me
I found my consolation
I made my peace, but I can't leave
You are the end for me
Run to the mercy inside
Oh, sacred hands
There in the place where I died
And you began
I need your affirmation
I lay my head, but I can't sleep
You are the end for me
I found my consolation
I made my peace, but I can't leave
You are the end for me
(You are the end)
I need you affirmation
I lay my head, but I can't sleep
You are the end for me
(You are the end)
I found my consolation
I made my peace, but I can't leave
You are the end for me
(You are the end)
“I wrote this song during the first few months of parenthood – learning how to keep a new human alive, stressing over every tiny thing, not being able to sleep out of fear that she’d stop breathing. I’d get up several times a night just to stare at her chest to make sure her lungs were pumping. I needed that consolation at least half a dozen times before I could sleep at all. It’s truly unreal the amount of concern a child introduces into your life. Ironically, each difficult step seems like nothing in hindsight.
In compiling the lyrics for the album artwork, I noticed that sleep is a common theme throughout this record. I can’t help but think it’s because my sleep schedule as a first-time father was turned upside down."
