The Union of Sinners and Saints, led by John Schlitt, lead singer of Petra, and Billy Smiley, guitarist, singer, and founding member of Whiteheart, released their first single from their upcoming CD today, and NRT has the exclusive stream! "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" is a scorching rock version of the Charles Wesley classic hymn. It is an early Easter present from icons of Christian rock music.
The track showcases an updated rock sound, but includes soaring signature Schlitt vocals and production that echoes the familiar Whiteheart sound. Fans of both groups have wondered when this musical smashup would occur. Now it's here, and this release is just a preview of what's coming.
The guys are putting together a full album with remakes of some of the most memorable songs from Petra and Whiteheart, plus some dramatic new compositions. The CD will be available exclusively at Lifeway Stores on June 17, and digitally on iTunes and other popular digital outlets world-wide.
The album features members from two of the best-selling Christian rock bands of all time and guest contributions by other well-known players in Christian music. New artist Jason Fowler (whom Smiley produced) joins the guys on vocals and guitar and will be featured during the band's touring later this summer. Bassist Anthony Sallee of Whiteheart will also be part of the touring band.
Schlitt says, "The idea of a new project really intrigued Billy and me. With our histories, it only made sense to feature Petra and Whiteheart favorites along with some of the new songs we were writing in the studio. We both still have a passion to share the love of Jesus. We're all sinners, and it's only through the blood of Christ that we can be called saints. Christ is our union. Thus, the band's name -- The Union of Sinners and Saints."
